Compress PDF to 200 KB

The portal said: PDF, under 200 KB. This page is set to that target before you start. Pick the file, run the job, and take away a PDF that fits the door, with the exact final size printed on the result. Everything runs in your browser; the file is never uploaded. A different target lives on the Compress PDF page.

Fixed by this page, the tight-portal preset. The bench probes the photos inside your PDF, picks a starting setting from the probe, and steps down only as far as it must.

How it works

Most of a photo-heavy PDF is the photos inside it. This page reads those photos, recompresses them at a smaller size and quality chosen from a quick probe of your file, rebuilds the PDF, and checks the result against 200 KB. On our test bench, an 11.65 MB photo PDF landed at 195 KB, under the line with room to spare.

Honest limits

We shrink PDFs by recompressing the images inside them and tidying the file. A PDF that is already tightly compressed may not get much smaller. We always show you the before and after size, and if we could not make it smaller, we say so and give you back your original. Photos stored in formats other than JPEG are left as they are in this version, and the result line tells you when that happened.

Questions

Why a whole page for 200 KB?

Because 200 KB is the door that rejects the most people: tight government and university form portals set it more than any other limit. This page is the Compress PDF bench with the target already set to 200 KB, so the job is two clicks: pick the file, run.

Will it always reach 200 KB?

No, and the page will not pretend. On our bench, an 11.65 MB photo PDF landed at 195 KB. A PDF whose bulk is not photos, or one that starts only slightly over, may not have enough to give up; when the target cannot be reached, the result line states the smallest size it could reach before you download.

What gives when a PDF shrinks this far?

The photos inside are recompressed smaller and softer. Text and drawings stay exactly as they were. The result line prints the size and quality setting used, so you can judge the trade.

Where does my PDF go?

Nowhere. It is read into this page and processed in your browser. Watch the network panel while it works if you want to check.
